How to take care of Cotton Apparels

The love we have for cotton apparels in any season and any occasion is irreplaceable. But for your favourite outfits in your wardrobe to last longer, necessary care must be taken while washing, drying and ironing them. Here are some simple instructions and tips on how to tend toyour shirts, t-shirts, jeans and trousers fashioned from cotton.

1. Shirts

Family dinners, office meetings or just regular office days call for a collection of crisp, formal shirts in your wardrobe. Follow some easy steps for your formal shirts to last longer. Before washing, make sure you have unbuttoned the shirt including the buttons of the cuffs and collars. If there are any stains, soak the shirt in a stain removing formula for around 15 – 20 minutes. Hand washing is recommended but if that is not possible, wash them in your machine on a gentle mode preferably in cold water. If there are any stains, use warm water. But don’t make it a habit to use warm water as that will result in faded colours. Hang the shirt and let it air dry if possible. While ironing, check the garment label for specific instructions to be followed regarding the temperature. If the shirt is a bit damp, it gives off great effects.

2. T-shirts

If you want to prolong your beloved t-shirts’ life,shower it with the necessary love and care it deserves! A warm water wash is perfect for a t-shirt but not too hot as that causes the tshirt to shrink. If your t-shirt is stained, avoid the use of bleach as bleach removes colour of the t-shirt as well. A stain remover works best for a stubborn stain. If you are drying the t-shirt in a dryer, take it out as soon as the dryer stops to avoid wrinkles. If you hang the t-shirt and let it air dry, the t-shirt won’t have much wrinkles and won’t require ironing. Another sure fire way to avoid wrinkles is to put in fabric softener. Hang the t-shirt inside out to avoid fading of colours.

3. Jeans

Your favourite pair of denims will have an increased lifespan if you DON’T wash it too often! Yes you read it right! You can use your jeans multiple times before washing them. And when they do require a wash, turn them inside out and wash them in cold water. Put in two spoons of salt during the first wash to help set the dye. In case you are handwashing them, soak them in water and half a spoon of mild detergent. Rinse them off after sometime and no scrubbing necessary. Hang your jeans and let them air dry. An important tip is avoid using bleach as that will ruin your denims. While ironing, use steam iron while ironing your jeans.

4. Trousers

Trousers are an essential part of your office outfits and hence appropriate care should be taken while washing them. Remember to do up all the buttons and zips and turn the trousers inside out before tossing them into your machine.A cold water wash is what works best. It’s best not to use too much laundry detergent. Air drying is the best method to dry your trousers. For ironing, make sure to follow the temperature instructions given on the care label of the trousers. Ironing your trouserswhile they are still damp, will produce great results!
